After a three year hiatus, Porsche AG has announced plans to return to the North America International Auto Show in Detroit in 2011.

Porsche have revealed they withdrew from the 2008 auto show because they wanted to find “more personal, direct ways to reach out and communicate to its potential customer base.

However, now that Porsche has merged with Volkswagen AG a decision has been made to increase brand identity by participating in the famous Detroit auto show.

Although the initial decision proved to be unpopular, a lot of other car manufacturers followed suit, including Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Ferrari, Infiniti, Rolls Royce, Nissan and Suzuki.

Now, almost three years on, Porsche’s decision to return to the auto show coincides with a similar move by Nissan and Infiniti, who are also returning to the show and are currently negotiating floor space.

However, Bill Perkins, co-chairman of the Detroit auto show, recently said that there is strong demand for space, so it is as of yet unclear what cars will go on display.

He added, “We’re still talking to several companies. [But] we still have flexibility to rearrange floor space if we need to.

It is believed that Porsche will use the Detroit Auto show to reveal their new 911 Carrera GTS, which has a 3.8-litre flat-six engine that can achieve 408 break horse power.

The organisers of the show are also arranging an exhibit that will be dedicated to the future of the motor industry, namely electric vehicles.

For those interested in the show it will be held from the 10th to 23rd of January 2011.
